Albert Guillaume, 1894, for Ambigue Comique, Gigolette. A woman is sitting on a café or bar table, smoking a cigerette.
The Théâtre de l’Ambigu-Comique ( literally, Theatre of the Comic-Ambiguity), a former Parisian theatre, was founded in 1769 on the boulevard du Temple immediately adjacent to the Théâtre de Nicolet. It was rebuilt in 1770 and 1786, but in 1827 was destroyed by fire. A new, larger theatre with a capacity of 2,000 as compared to the earlier 1,250 was built nearby on the boulevard Saint-Martin at its intersection with the rue de Bondy and opened the following year. The theatre was demolished in 1966.
Albert Guillaume (14 February 1873 – 10 August 1942) was a French painter and caricaturist.
Born in Paris, France, Albert Guillaume became a leading caricaturist during the Belle Époque. While remembered for his poster art, Guillaume also did oil paintings such as "Soirée parisienne," a portrait of Parisian dinner society. He created theatre posters as well as advertising posters that were greatly influenced by the work of one of the preeminent poster painters, Jules Chéret.
