【まるにいちのじ】字紋／一文字を紋章に選んだのは、恐らくその字画が鮮明で、識別しやすいのと、その文字に尚武的意義、それから瑞祥的意義があったためらしい。・・『参考太平記』・・によると・・一文字をカタキナシ、すなわち無敵と解釈していた思想ごときは・・この文字を紋章に選ばせた理由であろう。このように一文字が無敵、すなわち敵に打ち勝つ意義をもっているものと認めたことは、戦国時代の武士の名乗りに、この一文字を用いることが比較的多く行われ、かつこれを用いたものは、いずれもこの文字をカツ、すなわち勝つとよませたような点からも、その証拠とすることができる。例えば、山内対馬守の名乗りを一豊と書いて、これをカツトヨと読ませたり、滝川一益の子一時をカツトキと読ませるなど、いづれもこの意味からきているものである。・・一文字は・・一番乗り、一番槍というように、比較的武士の名誉を表章する場合に用いられた文字であるので、この文字は縁起のいい意味、すなわち瑞祥的意義も兼ねていたことがわかる。（沼田頼輔著「日本紋章学」）
