Maru-ni-Tsuru (a Japanese family crest featuring a Playing Cards
The maru-nichi-kiri is a weaving tool, a rod also known as a tate-maki-gu. The design depicts the tate-maki-gu bound by wrapped thread. It is also a term for the notched shapes used to join wooden parts, and is thought to have become a design due to the image of being firmly bound together. As a design, it has been used since the Fujiwara period and can be seen in works such as the "Nenchu gyoji e" and "Kasuga Gongen Genki E", and is believed to have become a family crest from a design. "Heian Monko" refers to the maru-nichi-kiri as sen-setsu or "sen-kiri" rather than "nichi-kiri".
