【ふたばあおい】葵紋は葵の葉、または葉と花とを象った紋である。葵は馬兜鈴（うまのすずくさ）科に属する植物で、フタバアオイかまたはカモアオイといい、学名を Asarum Caulescens Maxim という。古来、葵の字を用いてはいるが、この文字は錦葵（ぜにあおい）科に属する錦葵および牻牛児（げんのしょうこ）科に属するテンジクアオイなどに用いられたものであり、藤原時代、衣服の文様として用いられた小葵などは、この種の植物を象ったものである。早くからこの文字を用いたために、先入観となってフタバアオイにもこの文字を代用するようになり、ついにはこれを混同してしまった（「日本紋章学」）
