    【ほったもっこう】庶流正俊家の使った紋は「はじめ隅切角に縦木瓜を用う。正俊がとき延宝七年（１６７９）七月二十二日いまの紋にあらたむ」（寛政重修諸家譜）「いまの紋」がすなわち、「石持ち地抜き」の「堀田木瓜」で、宗家が消えて二十年近くのことである。しかも正俊堀田家の封領は、子孫奥羽の地を転封ののち、延享三年（１７４６）以降、旧縁の佐倉の地に復した。・・幕末の国事多難な中に、この堀田家最後の老中堀田正睦（まさよし）を出した。正睦はアメリカ使節ハリスとの安政仮条約の締結で苦境に陥り、かわって登場したのが、桜田門外で凶刃に伏す井伊直弼であった。（高橋賢一著「大名家の家紋」Ｐ２１３）／堀田木瓜は、縦木瓜を単に石持ち地抜きにしたものとは異なっている。
