【じゃのめ】蛇の目とはヘビの目のような紋形からつけられた名であるが、本来の姿は武士が合戦の時に張る弦の予備を巻いておく弦巻（つるまき）である。甲冑を着けた後、箙（えびら）の腰紐に掛けるように左の腰に装着する。（高澤等著「家紋の事典」）／弦巻は、弓のツルをまきつける革・籐製の弓具、甲冑姿の武者が腰につけた環、一見ヘビの目風のもの。後に、その形状が蛇の目に似ているため、蛇の目紋と称した。（伊藤幸作編「日本の紋章」）
