16 Vespasian's 16th Legion - Roman Eagle T-Shirt

Months after the disastrous Batavian revolt in the winter of 69-70 AD, Emperor Vespasian was able to recover the Rhineland. The XVI Gallica, one of the Legions that had surrendered to the Batavians, was reconstituted as the 16th Flavia Firma and transferred to Cappadocia in the east, along the Upper Euphrates. The Legion fought under Trajan in that Emperor's campaign against the Parthian Empire in 114-17, and would afterwards be redeployed to Samosata by Emperor Hadrian. In 161, after the Parthians defeated a Roman Army in eastern Cappadocia, this Legion was among those led by Emperor Lucius Verus when he retaliated. It also fought under Lucius Severus in his Parthian Campaigns of 194-98, which culminated in the capture of the Parthian capital of Ctesiphon and creation of the Mesopotamian province. After the creation of that Province and the reorganisation of the old frontier zone, the Legion built a bridge across the river Chabinas (Cendere Suya) that is still in use today. It later fought in the eastern campaigns of Severus' son, Caracalla. The Legion fought against the new Sasanian Persians during the reign of Severus Alexander in 233. Its last known mention is during the 4th century, when it was again guarding the Euphrates. Its emblem was the lion. 'Flavia Firma' - Standfast Flavian Legion.
