Detail of a coastal survey map of 1779, this is one of the first accurate surveys of the area. The map shows many coastal features that are recognisable today, as well as as providing historical record of Chatham's ever-changing eastern coastline. Note that the old meeting house and two windmills are among the few interior details. Taller buildings, including windmills, were used by mariners as aids to navigation.
