Cowboys drank coffee whenever they could. But in those days coffee beans or ground coffee went rancid fast bouncing around in a hot chuck wagon or in some cowpokes saddle bags. They mostly preferred Arbuckle coffee since the manufacture glazed the beans with real sugar to forestall stale and rancid coffee up the trail. Arbuckles' coffee rode into many a campaign with the military during the wild old west, and is still around today under various name changes. Maxwell house, Yuban and other past brand named coffee's all stem from the 1860's Arbuckles' coffee.
