About This Design
1928 British shilling keyring
The word "shilling" comes from the Anglo-Saxon word schilling, an ancient term that meant the value of a cow in Kent or a sheep elsewhere. Is that true? I have no idea; I just read it someplace. Shillings were minted from about 1500 to decimalisation. Before decimalisation, there were 20 shillings in a pound and 12 pence in a shilling. Now, the shilling is no more in the UK (though it lingers on in some other countries that used British measures). The old, pre-decimal system is often referred to as "pounds, shillings and pence" because prices were written pounds/shillings/pence. For example, 1/6 was a shilling and sixpence or "one and six. UK currency was decimalised in 1971. This coin is pre-decimal currency and is no longer legal tender.
