1st New York Heavy Artillery T-Shirt

1st New York Heavy Artillery T-Shirt

1st New York Heavy Artillery recruitment poster. The 1st New York Heavy Artillery, also known as the 130th New York Volunteer Infantry, played a crucial role in the American Civil War as a unit of the Union Army. Originally mustered into service in September 1862, the regiment was initially designated as the 9th New York Heavy Artillery before its reorganisation. Raised in response to the escalating conflict, the regiment primarily consisted of men from the New York City area, and its ranks were composed of both seasoned soldiers and recruits. The 1st New York Heavy Artillery participated in various campaigns, including the Siege of Suffolk, the Battle of Cold Harbour, and the Siege of Petersburg. Known for its proficiency in operating heavy artillery pieces, the regiment served in both defensive and offensive roles during the war. In 1864, the unit experienced a significant reorganisation that transformed it into an infantry regiment, reflecting the changing nature of the conflict and the strategic needs of the Union Army. The 1st New York Heavy Artillery continued to contribute to the Union war effort until the end of the Civil War, witnessing and participating in some of the most challenging and pivotal moments of the conflict. By the war's conclusion, the regiment had earned a reputation for its discipline and effectiveness in battle. However, this came at a cost, as the 1st New York Heavy Artillery suffered substantial casualties throughout its service. The regiment's role in the Civil War highlighted the adaptability of military units during the conflict, as they shifted from specialised artillery duties to infantry engagements based on the evolving demands of the war.
