January: The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso clings to a rock face along Lago Maggiore, Italy, with the Swiss Alps in the background. February: Old people in Mao Suits playing Mahjong in Guangzhou, China. What made this picture special for me was the captivating look on these old Chinese faces; and their clothing. March: Vegetable Market in Kota Bharu, Malaysia. Markets are a great place for colorful pictures of local life. April: Scenic view of smoldering Mount Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan, against against a blue sky with white clouds. May: Wasserkirche and Helmhaus museum - with Grossmunster to the left - as seen from Stadthausquai and Munsterbrucke in Zurich, Switzerland. June: The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen (Neuhausen am Rheinfall), in northern Switzerland, is the largest plain waterfall in Europe. July: Cycling fans with Swiss flags making their way up toward Verbier in Switzerland, for the final mountain climb of Stage 15 in the 2009 Tour de France cycle race. August: The Harbor Bridge is as classic a symbol of Sydney as the shells of the Opera House itself. Sydney Harbor Bridge, seen here at sunset, connects the Sydney central business district with the North Shore commercial and residential areas. September: Located on Zwarteleenstraat in Zillebeke, south-east of Ypres, the cratered landscaping of Hill 60 bears the scars of a silent witness to an underground war of mines and counter-mines. October: Driving through Baden-Baden, a spa town in south-western Germany's Black Forest region, in the early hours of Halloween, the morning mist gently lifts as the sun picks out the autumnal colors of the leaves decorating the trees in the famous Kurgarten. November: Fighting on the Western Front ceased at the 11th hour; on the 11th day, of the 11th month after The Armistice was signed in the forest of Compiegne in 1918. The Clairiere de l'Armistice was laid out in 1922, with a museum building now housing a copy of the railway carriage used to sign the 1918 Armistice. December: Which walk to take; The Valley or Key Point? In New Zealand's early summer, the Valley route offers great views of the herb fields.
