According to Douglas Adams in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 42 is "the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything". This sculpture is located near the 42nd Parallel on the Chiswick property overlooking the town of Ross in Tasmania. Street lights, the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds and the glow of the Aurora Australis provide a silhouetting backdrop. The viewpoint of the photo is such that a vertical line drawn from the horizon between the 4 & 2 represents the local meridian that passes through the South Celestial Pole, indicating direct south. The elevation of the SCP is 42˚ above the horizon, just above the top of the sculpture.
