A Storm in the Rocky Mountains Poster

Albert Bierstadt’s A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie (1866) is a monumental oil on canvas painting measuring approximately 210.8 × 361.3 cm (83 × 142.25 inches), held by the Brooklyn Museum. Created from sketches made during Bierstadt’s 1863 expedition to the Colorado Rockies, the painting dramatically reorganises and exaggerates the scale of the mountains to enhance its visual drama. It depicts a thunderstorm breaking over rugged terrain, with sunlight piercing through clouds to illuminate the snow-capped peak of Mount Rosalie-named by Bierstadt after his future wife, Rosalie Osborne Ludlow. The foreground features Native American hunters and an encampment by a stream, emphasizing the connection between humans and the wilderness. Bierstadt’s theatrical use of lighting and sweeping composition exemplifies romantic realism and luminism, capturing the sublime grandeur of the American West during a period of rapid expansion. Originally exhibited as a “Great Picture” with theatrical lighting to thrill audiences, it toured the United States after completion and remains a celebrated masterpiece of 19th-century American landscape art. The painting also carries a complex legacy: the mountain was renamed Mount Evans in 1895 after a territorial governor linked to violent conflicts with Indigenous peoples, and in 2023 it was officially renamed Blue Sky following Indigenous consultation.

I originally ordered this print in a larger size but was not pleased with the clarity of it. When I contacted Zazzle, they responded really quickly and were very helpful. I was able to reorder the print in a smaller size and it was shipped to me within a couple of weeks. The print was packaged well to ensure there was no damage during transit (Eco friendly, too!), and I am really pleased with it. I am so grateful to the customer service team for the professional way they handled my order. I had this printed on matt finish card and I was really pleased with the quality. The colours were rich and the image sharp.
