This beautiful map of Africa was published in July 1960 by National Geographic with three articles, including "Africa: The Winds of Freedom Stir a Continent." In the 1960s, Africa faced many changes and struggled with many countries to gain its independence. The map shows the boundaries as they existed in July 1960. Numerous place names, railway lines, airports, roads and many other details are also drawn. Also geographic features such as mountains, deserts, rivers, lakes are shown on the map. Map insertions show islands such as the Cape Verde Islands, Mauritius, La Reunion, Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Azores or the Seychelles and the Great Rift Valley.
