Aikido is exercised by combining attacking movements, redirecting the adversarial force, rather than fighting it directly. This requires reduced physical force, as the aikidoka (a aikidoka practicing aikido) drives the attacking impulse by entering the attack from the transformation of the rival movements. The techniques are complemented by several common projections, twists and bruises.
