The Duke of Northumberland title was held by Hugh Smithson, the father of James Smithson (1765-1829) who left a bequest to the United States to found the Smithsonian Institution for the "increase and diffusion of knowledge." | Smithsonian and the Smithsonian logo are registered trademarks
