Altea Spain Magnet

Altea, often called the 'dome of the Mediterranean,' is a breathtakingly beautiful town perched on a hillside overlooking the sea in Alicante, Spain. Its distinct skyline, dominated by the brilliant blue-domed church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, is recognisable from kilometres away. The heart of Altea is its vibrant old town, or 'Casco Antiguo,' a labyrinth of steep, winding, cobblestone streets flanked by whitewashed houses adorned with colourful cascading bougainvillea. This charming old town leads up to a peaceful square offering spectacular panoramic views of the entire Costa Blanca coastline and the shimmering Mediterranean. Its artistic character is evident in the numerous small art galleries, craft boutiques, and cosy restaurants that give the town its unique and inspiring atmosphere. Historically, Altea's strategic location made it a point of conflict and trade, reflected in its varied architectural details and ancient walls. The name 'Altea' may originate from the Greek 'Althaia,' meaning 'I heal,' possibly referring to its fresh waters or therapeutic environment, and it has long been a haven for artists and writers. From the bustling fisherman's harbour at the foot of the hill to the peaceful, quiet corners within its walls, Altea offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It remains one of the most picturesque and preserved coastal towns in Spain, attracting visitors who seek an authentic Mediterranean experience away from the mass tourism resorts.
