Alton is built into the steep limestone bluffs along the Mississippi River, famous for its dramatic elevation changes and the Piasa Bird mural painted on the cliffside. The town horizon is a vertical tapestry of historic homes and the Clark Bridge. Looking at Alton from the river horizon, the town rises sharply from the water, creating a tiered effect of rooftops and trees. The white cables of the bridge and the pale limestone cliffs provide a bright, graphic foundation for the deep colours of the town's architecture.
