Amelia Jenks Bloomer Greeting and Note Cards
Amelia Jenks Bloomer was born in Homer NY in 1818. A staunch advocate of women's rights and prohibition, she was an editor, author, publisher, teacher and lecturer. Famous for her stand in favour of dress reform, she appeared at her lectures during the early 1850s wearing full trousers, gathered at the ankle, under a short skirt. Although not the first to adopt this style, her advocacy popularised it as "bloomers." The picture on this card is from a lithograph of Amelia Jenks Bloomer in her customary costume. It was published by N in 1851. We also have matching USPS Postage Stamps and other items in this design.
