The Ancestors of Tehamana, or Tehamana Has Many Parents (Merahi metua no Tehamana) by Paul Gauguin, oil on canvas 1893, is a portrait painting of a seated young woman in a prim, boldly blue and white striped dress holding a fan and wearing a crown of white flowers in her hair. Behind her is a frieze of ancient Polynesian or Tahitian ancestral gods as primitive totem sculptures. Gauguin painted this expressive example of his mature Post-Impressionist style while famously living in Tahiti in the south Pacific islands. The subject, Tehamana, was his companion who posed for many paintings.
