Two Hares (1865–90) is a whimsical watercolor and gouache masterpiece by the Scottish artist and poet William Bell Scott, a close associate of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This charming illustration features two brown hares standing in a symmetrical, heraldic pose against a dark background, each delicately nibbling on a daisy. Originally created to decorate Penkill Castle in Scotland, the work reflects Scott’s romantic connection to the castle’s owner, Alice Boyd. The bold contrast between the rich earthy tones of the rabbits and the vibrant green leaves creates a timeless folk art aesthetic that remains highly sought after for vintage-style home decor.
