There is good news about climate change and it is really, really good too! The same voices that have been telling us that climate change is not real, that it is a scientific conspiracy, that it just a natural cycle and that it will be good for humanity—these are the same confused voices that are telling us that the solutions to climate change will ruin our economy. The economists that have been studying the solutions, have published nearly 100 papers on the subject already. They are focusing on the costs of the solutions being about one percent of global gross domestic product (GDP) every year for a hundred years. Global GDP is the total amount of money from all financial transactions of any kind for goods and services of any kind made in the entire world for that year. This amount of money last year was about $640 trillion, or $640,000,000,000.00. One percent of this would be $640 billion dollars per year and we need to spend this amount of money every year for the next 100 years to solve the greenhouse gas pollution crisis. It is clear why the deniers have said this will ruin our economy. This mountainous amount of money seems quite capable of economic devastation. That is, until this amount of money is compared to something we more easily understand. About this same amount of money has already been spent, every year for the last 100 years, on installing toilets and wastewater collection and treatment systems across the planet. It’s been spent just on our drinking water infrastructure, just on our roads, just on our electric generation and distribution system, just on our hospitals and health care clinics. Every year, just in the U.S., our military budget, not counting wars, is $600 billion… Why in the world do we continue to listen to the voices?
