The Apollo program was the third human spaceflight program carried out by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the United States' civilian space agency. On Friday, January 27, 1967, the United States space program was stunned when a flash fire destroyed the Apollo 1 spacecraft, killing astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White II, and Roger Chaffee.
