The 9th Cavalry Regiment is a parent cavalry regiment of the United States Army. It was historically one of the Army's four segregated African-American regiments and was part of what was known as the Buffalo Soldiers. The regiment saw combat during the Indian and Spanish–American Wars. It was one of the original six regiments of the regular U.S. Army set aside for black enlisted men. The 9th Cavalry Regiment was formed in December 1864 by consolidating the 17th Mississippi and 17th Tennessee Cavalry Battalions and served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
