Art deco mug with Shoreham Airport and Chipmunk

This mug features a striking illustration of Shoreham Airport in Art Deco poster-style. Design by digital artist Vicky Vaughan, inspired by the Art Deco style architecture. The airport, based in the parish of Lancing near Shoreham-by-Sea in Sussex was founded in 1910 and is the oldest purpose-built commercial airport in the UK. There has been much debate over its name and it is now officially known as Brighton City Airport. Many people, including the artist, still refer to it as Shoreham Airport. Featured in the illustration is a de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk plane which was actually built in the 1950s and replaced the de Havilland Tiger Moth which was built in the 1930s which is officially the Art Deco period. However, artistic license is a wonderful thing! Watch out for the Tiger Moth version of this illustration ... The Chipmunk is a tandem, two-seater single-engined trainer aircraft which was used by the Royal Canadian Airforce and the Royal Airforce through much of the post-Second World War years. There are over 500 DHC-1 Chipmunks which remain airworthy with more being rebuilt every year. The flying plane is the DH89A Dragon Rapide which is constructed in wood and is a twin-engine biplane passenger aircraft. The first operator was Hillman Airways and it made its debut flight at Hatfield on 13 July 1934, averaging 158 mph in the King’s Cup Air Race, before having to retire due to hail damage.
