Textile design, 1922, pencil and watercolor. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, 1868 - 1928 was a Scottish architect, designer, watercolorist, and sculptor. He was a designer in the Arts and Crafts movement and also the main exponent of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom. He had a considerable influence on European design. Mackintosh, in collaboration with three other students, Margaret Macdonald, her sister, Frances MacDonald, and Herbert McNair, exhibited in Glasgow, London and Vienna, and these exhibitions helped establish Mackintosh's reputation. The group of artists, known as "The Four," exhibited in Europe and influenced the Viennese Art Nouveau movement. Mackintosh achieved an international reputation in the 1890s as a designer of unorthodox posters, craftwork, and furniture. In contrast to contemporary fashion his work was light, elegant, and original. Margaret MacDonald who became Mackintosh’s his wife in 1900 was an acclaimed artist in her own right and worked in partnership with her husband on many of his important projects.
