The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, was a pivotal engagement during the American Civil War. It marked the first major conflict on Northern soil and is recognised as the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. General Robert E. Lee's Southern Army of Northern Virginia clashed with Major General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac in a brutal and strategically significant confrontation. The Southern forces, under Lee's command, aimed to secure a decisive victory on Union soil and potentially influence European powers to recognise the Confederacy. However, the battle ended in a tactical draw, with both sides suffering significant casualties. The Southern army, though holding its ground, retreated back across the Potomac River.
