Artillery Hell Postcard

Artillery Hell Postcard

Artillery Hell, by Captain James Hope. Scene from the Battle of Antietam. The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, was a pivotal engagement during the American Civil War. It marked the first major conflict on Northern soil and is recognised as the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. General Robert E. Lee's Southern Army of Northern Virginia clashed with Major General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac in a brutal and strategically significant confrontation. The Southern forces, under Lee's command, aimed to secure a decisive victory on Union soil and potentially influence European powers to recognise the Confederacy. However, the battle ended in a tactical draw, with both sides suffering significant casualties. The Southern army, though holding its ground, retreated back across the Potomac River. Despite the inconclusive outcome, the Battle of Antietam had profound implications. The high casualty count, coupled with the strategic withdrawal of the Southern forces, provided President Abraham Lincoln with the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, changing the nature of the war by declaring all slaves in Southern states to be free. Antietam's historical significance extends beyond the immediate military outcome, as it played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of the Civil War. The battle demonstrated the resilience of both the Union and Southern armies, while also prompting diplomatic considerations from European powers. Additionally, it marked a turning point in the conflict, setting the stage for future Union offensives and altering the war's focus to include the abolition of slavery as a central goal.

Such a huge range of different frogs available, which made my choices very difficult and now the reason I have a whole draw full of cards and postcards! Much better quality than you can buy in the shops and they are exactly on the subject I love and adore too.
