This design features a painting by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini (1842–1931), who lived and worked in Paris, France, for most of his artistic career. It depicts a cultured and artistic gentleman sitting in a chair. He is dressed formally with a bowtie and pince-nez glasses. He also has a cane and top hat on the table beside him. He appears to be looking at a book of artistic prints, or perhaps a scholarly journal. There is a canvas painting of a female figure behind him. Newspapers are open on the table. There are also some paints and brushes, suggesting that he is an artist himself. The original art was painted by Giovanni Boldini circa 1866.
