My son has recently been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum disorder. He is remarkably skilled in certain areas of development, and grossly delayed in others. At times, he becomes overstimulated in public areas and has been known to melt down. If there's anything worse than being unable to help him regain his composure, it is the scathing comments from people who suggest that my son's behaviour is a choice or that my deficiencies in parenting are to blame. I've reacted in a myriad of ways in these situations, but I have decided I'd rather spread knowledge and seek understanding and tolerance than sink to the level of ignorant and mean people. I plan to hand one to anyone who provides an unsolicited review of my parenting skills from now on.
