In this delicate artwork, Japanese aristocrats enjoy the elegant tradition of reciting classical poetry while admiring spring and autumn foliage. Premier court painter Tosa Mitsuoki captures the fleeting beauty of autumn in a melancholic scene after the departure of courtiers. A cherry tree blooms on one screen, while the other displays vibrant red and gold maple leaves. Poems on slips of paper, called tanzaku, hang from the branches, bearing the lingering presence of humans. The screens, possibly commissioned by or gifted to Tofukumon'in, a daughter of the Tokugawa shogun who married the emperor Gomizunoo, reflect a renaissance of courtly taste, reminiscent of early mediaeval aristocratic life.
