Adapted from an unsigned graphite engraving showing the first manned gas balloon flight descending near Beaumont, France. The hydrogen-filled “globe” balloon belonging to and carrying Jacques Alexander César Charles and Nicolas-Luis Robert departed from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, France on Monday, December 1, 1783. After flying a distance of 27 miles in two hours, they landed on the plain of Nesle. Among the spectators in the left foreground are the Duke de Chartres and the Duke de Fitz-James.
