This vintage artwork adaptation pays tribute to French balloonist Eugene Godard, one of the two men in the gondola. The other passenger is believed to be violinist Ovide Musin who wrote in his memoirs of being Godard's passenger on his 500th ascension. Godard's autograph appears on the original unsigned ink drawing on graphite, part of the Tissandier Collection. Born in France, Godard made his first ascension in 1847 under a hot air balloon envelope he constructed from paper.
