Barkas was the name of an East German (GDR, DDR, Deutsche Demokratische Republic) automobile manufacturer and the brand name of commercial vans and minibuses from 1961 to 1991. Barkas vans were built in a factory in Karl-Marx-Stadt, now known as Chemnitz. The most famous Barkas model was the legendary B 1000. Barkas B 1000 vans were used by Police, Fire, and Stasi. They were available in pickup, flatbed, ambulance and box van styles.
