Battle of Isandlwana Postcard

Battle of Isandlwana Postcard

he Battle of Isandlwana, fought on January 22, 1879, during the Anglo-Zulu War, stands as one of the most significant and disastrous conflicts in British military history. The British, led by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Pulleine, underestimated the strength and tactics of the Zulu warriors, led by Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande and Prince Ntshingwayo kaMahole Khoza. The British had invaded Zululand in an attempt to expand their influence in Southern Africa and faced a Zulu army that outnumbered them significantly. The battle began when the Zulus launched a coordinated assault on the British camp at Isandlwana, catching them off guard. Despite being equipped with modern firearms, the British were ill-prepared for the ferocity and strategic manoeuvring of the Zulu warriors. The Zulus, armed mainly with traditional weapons like spears and shields, overwhelmed the British defences, leading to a devastating defeat for the British forces. Approximately 1,300 British and colonial troops were killed, making Isandlwana one of the most humiliating defeats in the annals of the British Empire. The Battle of Isandlwana had significant repercussions. It not only stunned the British Empire but also demonstrated the prowess and military acumen of the Zulu warriors. It prompted a reevaluation of British military tactics and led to the eventual victory of British forces in the war, including the famous Battle of Rorke's Drift. Isandlwana remains a poignant reminder of the perils of underestimating an adversary and the importance of understanding the terrain and tactics of the enemy in any military campaign.

Such a huge range of different frogs available, which made my choices very difficult and now the reason I have a whole draw full of cards and postcards! Much better quality than you can buy in the shops and they are exactly on the subject I love and adore too.
