Bayon Temple Cambodia Postcard

Bayon Temple stands at the literal and spiritual centre of the ancient royal city of Angkor Thom, just north of Siem Reap. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the structure is globally renowned for its unique architecture. Unlike the sweeping, classical lines of Angkor Wat, Bayon is a dense, multi-tiered complex defined by its 'face-towers'—dozens of massive stone towers carved with hundreds of serene, enigmatic smiling faces commonly believed to depict the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, King Jayavarman VII himself, or a combination of both. As visitors navigate the upper terrace, they are brought face-to-face with these gigantic, weathered stone visages that gaze out in all four cardinal directions, creating an immersive, otherworldly atmosphere. The lower galleries feature remarkably detailed bas-reliefs that stretch across thousands of metres, providing a vivid historical record of daily Khmer life, market scenes, naval battles, and grand royal processions.
