The Belfry of Bruges, a prominent symbol of the city's power and autonomy, has stood watch over the Markt, or Market Square, for centuries. Construction of this mediaeval bell tower began in the 13th century, and it has since undergone several modifications, including the addition of its top section in the late 15th century. Today, it stands at approximately 83 metres (272 feet) tall, offering a commanding presence over the historical centre of Bruges. A climb of 366 steps rewards visitors with panoramic views of the city's rooftops, winding canals, and the surrounding countryside. Within the belfry, the former treasury houses records and charters, while the carillon, featuring 47 bells, still rings out across the city, its melodies a cherished part of Bruges's soundscape. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Belfry of Bruges remains one of the city's most beloved and iconic landmarks.
