French artist John James Audubon painted this male Belted Kingfisher in the early 1800's using watercolor paints and pen-and-ink. Usually found near water because their diet primarily consists of small fish. The males are bluish, white and black while females of the species actually have more colours than males with an additional rusty coloured band across the front. A well known bird and a favourite of many birdwatchers and birders.
