Berthe Morisot - The Garden at Bougival Tapestry

The Garden at Bougival (Le jardin à Bougival), painted by Berthe Morisot in 1884 in oil on canvas, is an Impressionist garden scene filled with roses, dense foliage and glimpses of the house in Bougival. Morisot transforms a real domestic garden into a luminous, richly layered landscape where loose brushwork and flickering colour make light and vegetation more important than precise outlines. She spent the summers of 1881 to 1884 at Bougival with her family, and the property inspired a substantial group of garden pictures. This work was later shown as Jardin à Bougival, no. 83, at the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1886.
