Blue Mexican Petunia Flower (Ruellia brittoniana) Card

This greeting card features a single blossom of a blue Mexian petunia (Ruellia brittoniana). Mexican petunias are not petunias at all, but the flower resembles a petunia. It is a perennial that gets 3-4 feet tall, has attractive purplish stems and narrow, lance-shaped leaves. It thrives in full, hot sun, even in the low deserts of Arizona. It will grow equally well in wet or dry soil. Individual flowers only last one day, but there are always new ones opening. They are beloved by hummingbirds and butterflies, but BEWARE! This tough plant can be invasive. It spreads by roots that are hard to kill, and its exploding seed capsules spread seed far and wide.
