The Atomium, one of Belgium’s most iconic landmarks, is a striking architectural structure located in Brussels. Originally built for the 1958 Brussels World Expo (Expo 58), the Atomium was designed by engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak. The structure represents an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, symbolising progress in science and the peaceful use of atomic energy. Standing 102 metres (335 feet) tall, the Atomium consists of nine interconnected spheres, each measuring 18 metres (59 feet) in diameter, connected by tubes containing escalators and staircases. Initially intended as a temporary exhibition, the Atomium became a permanent fixture due to its popularity and was fully renovated in 2006. Today, the Atomium functions as both a museum and a cultural space, offering visitors a fascinating journey through science, design, and history. Inside, several spheres house exhibitions on Expo 58, Belgian history, and futuristic visions of science and technology. The highest sphere features a panoramic restaurant and observation deck, providing breathtaking views of Brussels and beyond. At night, the structure is illuminated by LED lights, making it a dazzling sight. As one of the most unique buildings in Europe, the Atomium continues to be a symbol of innovation and modernity, attracting visitors from all over the world.
