Fabulous Chinook salmon -- also known as king salmon, Quinnat salmon, spring salmon and Tyee salmon. A large king salmon is a much-desired, highly-prized catch for the sporting angler. Adult Chinook salmon can get up to 55 to 60 inches in length and up to 130 pounds. The sport-caught record for king salmon was established in 1985 at 97.25 pounds; while the commercial catch world record was set in the late 70's at 126 pounds. Before returning to their home rivers to spawn, Chinook may spend anywhere from one to eight years in the ocean. Though naturally found in waters of the Pacific Northwest, including parts of Canada and Alaska, Chinook salmon has also been introduced successfully into the some regions of the Great Lakes. Serious anglers would love the opportunity to fish for king salmon because of the fight they put up once hooked. Most folks are also aware of the health benefits of eating salmon: the rich omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and selenium. Salmon also contains bioactive peptides that might provide protection for joint cartilage, support insulin effectiveness and control digestive inflammation. However, what they may NOT know is that these benefits are only derived from WILD salmon. Farmed salmon has dramatically fewer health benefits.
