Camp Leakey Orangutan Mother and Baby

An animal family, mother and son orangutan, returned to Camp Leakey and decided that the rice the humans were cooking looked quite tasty, so they helped themselves. The mother -Akmad - is an O.F.I. success story. Raised as an orphan in the 1970's by Dr. Birute M. Galdikas, the founder of Orangutan Foundation International, she has lived in the wild for almost three decades and blessed the forest with several offspring. In October 1975, Dr. Galdikas and Akmad appeared on the cover of National Geographic Magazine. If you do a search for that issue, Akmad is the little toddler walking in front . Dr. Galdikas is a renowned primatologist and is one of the three women called "Leakey's Angels" - the other two being Jane Goodall and the late Dian Fossey (the subject of the movie "Gorillas in the Mist")
