Carbonated Warbler Audubon Bird
This vintage reproduction of John James Audubon’s Plate 60 from Birds of America features a pair of Carbonated Warblers perched in a serviceberry bush, adorned with ripe red berries. Also known as May Bush, May Cherry, or Saskatoon, the serviceberry is as versatile as it is beautiful, boasting fragrant white flowers in spring and delicious blueberry-like berries in summer. These berries are a valuable food source for animals and are even edible for humans.
The Carbonated Warbler, despite its effervescent name, is not named for any bubbly traits. Its name comes from its dark cap and streaks, giving it a distinctive look. These two birds, observed by Audubon in Kentucky, are part of his “mystery birds.” Though some speculate they may be immature Cape May Warblers, no other specimens like them have ever been found. This makes the Carbonated Warbler a truly one-of-a-kind species—no carbon copies here!
With its vibrant yellow and black plumage, this enigmatic little bird adds charm and intrigue to any collection. Audubon’s detailed illustration invites you to celebrate the beauty and mystery of this rare bird and its picturesque perch, making it perfect for bird lovers, art enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates a story behind the art.
