Carolina parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis Postcard

Carolina parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis Postcard

This elegant natural history illustration depicts the now-extinct Carolina parakeet, a once-vibrant parrot native to the eastern and midwestern regions of the United States. Perched on a textured branch, the bird is shown in a dynamic pose with partially outstretched wings, highlighting the intricate layering of its plumage. Its body is primarily a rich green, subtly shaded to suggest depth and softness, while the head features a striking contrast of bright yellow and a reddish-orange face—one of the species’ most recognisable traits. This artwork comes from Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets, illustrated by the renowned French naturalist artist Jacques Barraband (1767–1809). Barraband was celebrated for his precise and lifelike depictions of birds, often working in collaboration with scientists to document species with both artistic beauty and scientific accuracy. The fine detailing in the feathers, beak, and claws reflects this dual purpose, blending aesthetics with taxonomy. The Carolina parakeet was the only parrot species endemic to the United States. It inhabited forests, swamps, and river valleys, often travelling in noisy flocks. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction, hunting, and disease, the species declined rapidly in the 19th century, with the last known individual dying in captivity in 1918. This illustration not only captures the bird’s vivid coloration and graceful form but also serves as a historical record of a lost species. It stands as both a scientific document and a poignant reminder of the fragility of biodiversity.

Such a huge range of different frogs available, which made my choices very difficult and now the reason I have a whole draw full of cards and postcards! Much better quality than you can buy in the shops and they are exactly on the subject I love and adore too.
