Two side-by-side cells at Alcatraz. There was no privacy at Alcatraz. Speaking to other convicts was prohibited. Perhaps when a guard was on the other end of the block, a convict would steal a few moments of conversation with the man in the adjoining cell. Solitary confinement. This is the prison of the mind where despair and depression sets in or hope and inspiration rises. For some men, it was too much and they never left the rock; for others, they kept hope alive, were eventually released, and became solid citizens back in society--never to return.

The colours were rich and the image sharp.
