This cute little cherub is a detail from the “Sistine Madonna” painted by Raphael in 1512-14. The painting was commissioned in 1512 by Pope Julius II in honour of his late uncle, Pope Sixtus IV.
Raphael, 1483 - 1520, was an Italian painter and architect. He was a leading figure of Italian High Renaissance classicism, and was best known for his "Madonna’s," including the Sistine Madonna, and for his large figure compositions in the Palace of the Vatican in Rome.
