Chinese Paper-Cut Butterfly Design - Magnet

Chinese Paper Cutting or Jianzhi (Chinese: 剪纸, jiǎn zhǐ) is the first type of paper cutting design, since paper was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. The art form later spread to other parts of the world with different regions adopting their own cultural styles. Because the cut outs are also used to decorate doors and windows, they are sometimes referred to "chuāng huā" (窗花), meaning Window Flower. Chinese paper cutting is a unique art form and has existed for thousands of years with a long history featuring both national and regional themes. Paper began as a precious commodity in the Han Dynasty. Most of the people with access to paper for an entertainment cause such as art were usually nobles in royal palaces. The oldest surviving paper cut out is a symmetrical circle from the 6th century found in Xinjiang, China. From the 7th to 13th century, paper cutting became popular especially during Chinese holiday festivals. The art spread to the rest of the world in the 14th century. Throughout the Qing Dynasty many paper cutting skills were developed including drafting and the use of smoked papers. By the end of the Qing ruling however, new art forms were being introduced. The Republic of China later tried to revive the art in the 1980s. In the rural countryside in mainland China, paper cutting is a traditionally female activity. In the past, every girl was expected to master it and brides were often judged by their skill. Professional paper cutting artists are, on the other hand, usually male and have guaranteed incomes and work together in workshops. Paper Cutting is one of China's most popular folk arts. A beautiful black and white butterfly with intricate and detailed markings make this a very special design.

My work uses Velcro spots and laminated paper for the "clean/dirty" sign and has to replace it every few weeks (people resist using it as the Velcro dots peal off). I saw these and instantly purchased them for work AND our home dish drawers. I am really impressed by the quality and being raised slightly means they are easy to grab and turn over. Visual Such a great solution and highly recommended! The printing is great - I like the colourway and the font.

I think that besides the cute picture on the magnet, this product is strong, sticks well to surfaces, and is a great addition to any household. The image is perfect, and looks just like the character in the book.
