The Karigane crest originated from a pattern and is based on aesthetic significance. As a pattern, it can be seen in picture scrolls such as 'The Diary of Murasaki Shikibu', indicating that it was already in use during the Fujiwara period. The Karigane crest likely evolved from this pattern (according to 'Japanese Crests' by Yoriyoshi Numata).
