Maru ni Futatsuhiki / Hikiryō crest / The Hikiryō crest originally came from the Genpei period's curtain dyeing. The military curtain used on the battlefield was made by sewing five pieces of fabric together, with the middle piece dyed black, called 'nakaguro'. This is one 'hikiryō'. The 'futatsu hikiryō' is made by layering fabric in white, black, white, black, and white from top to bottom... (omitted) However, there is no clear theory on what the 'hikiryō' crest is designed to represent. (from 'Reading Family Crests' by Toshio Nosaka)
